the 1960s a model of social revolution captured the imagination of scholars and students and inspired much theologizing and contemporary imperatives for social reform. In the past fifteen years all three models have waned before the new perception that Israel emerged by a slow internal process. We appear to be in the middle of a ‘paradigm shift’ as much of the archaeological data and biblical texts is being considered in a new fashion. The new understanding of how Israel emerged as a social entity
